The Anticipation of Loss
original textured acrylic on canvas painting

The imagining of a wildfire approaching Whistler via northeast of Blackcomb Mountain. As a person with a wildfire fighter as a partner and another as a very close friend, and having lived through the impending evacuation of the place I was living in more than once, and with a deep connection to and respect for the balance of nature and humanity, wildfire season has been a constant source of anxiety and frustration for many, many years. While this is a scene I hope never to see occur, it captures, I hope, the dread and reality of what the loss of a place significant to many can look like - and how close any place in Canada (and abroad) is to experiencing a moment like this if significant change isn’t brought about.
